The Can-Am Defender is known as one of the most capable utility rigs on the market. So how do you upgrade something that good? Simple, add three more seats. That gives us the 2025 Can-Am Defender Max, BRP’s hard-working people-hauler.

Not sure what kind of Defender you need? No problem. Can-Am offers five different trims for the Defender Max with tons of accessory options on a spectrum of price points. There are Defenders ranging from bare-bones work rigs to a luxury splurge.

How much power does it make?

The Defender Max gets a few different engine options, ranging from 52 hp out of the HD7 to 82 hp from the HD10. As with everything about the Defender Max, engine options vary with each trim. For example, the base model Defender Max gets either the HD7 or the 65-hp HD9. Purpose-built trims like the X MR, Lonestar, and the Limited only get one option, the HD10.

If you can afford it, go with the HD10. It’s smooth, powerful, and makes the Defender feel like more than an overgrown golf cart. While all Defender Max trims share the same 2,500-lb towing capacity, the HD10 feels a lot more confident under load than the HD7 or HD9.

What makes it special?

Unlike most utility rigs with only one or two trims to choose from, Can-Am offers an option to fit every budget and lifestyle. You can truly make it your own from the factory.

The base model is simple work rig that would fit right at home on any job site, farm, or property. If you want something a bit flashier to go tailgating in, the Lonestar edition comes with a bangin’ stereo and an optional enclosed cab. There’s even a mudding trim with 30-inch mud tires and full doors.

Why do I want it?

The Defender has earned a spot as one of the top utility side-by-sides on the market, and for good reason. An industry-standard 2,500-lb towing capacity and 1,000-lb bed capacity gives it the capability to do almost any job you can point it at.

And if you’re looking at rec-ute rigs because you want something that can handle trail riding as well as work, the Defender has you covered. Don’t expect it to compete with expensive sport side-by-sides, but it can still hold its own on light trails. Or you can test its limits on some obstacles, if you’re brave enough. With the right driver, you’ll be surprised at how well it can handle difficult trails.

Why don’t I want it?

The Defender can get expensive as you dive into different trims or the accessory catalogue. The most expensive trim is the Lonestar Cab, which starts at $36,699. That’s approaching new car money.

Other than price, there are models from Kubota and John Deere that outclass it in towing and bed capacities. Those other models also feel more solid in their build quality, getting metal doors and beds while the Defender gets rough plastics throughout.

Which trim should I get?

Choice of trim really comes down to what you’re going to be using it for. If it were us, we’d go with the Max XT. You still get features like a winch, aluminum wheels, and a full skid plate for $21,399. While an enclosed cab would be ideal, the cheapest model with a cab is the Limited, which starts at $33,499. That’s another $12,000 for just a cab, HVAC, and a Smart-Lok front differential.

Of course, if money is no object, get the Lonestar Cab. It’s got all the top features, comes in a sleek black colorway, and has the capability to do just about anything you could ask of it. Be ready to open your wallet, as the Lonestar Cab starts at $36,699.

If I like this… what else should I look at?

The Polaris Ranger XP4 1000is the direct competitor to this rig. It’s got four doors, luxury trim options, and even a more powerful engine. If you’re looking for something with a bit more capability, check out the Ranger XD 1500. It’s an honest-to-god 3/4-ton truck with a steel CVT belt, making it the top dog for utility rigs.
